We are the Rambling Roos; Viki & Roger!
We are a couple of nearly empty-nesters (our last one launches in Summer, 2019) looking forward to the day we can become full-time RVers. We have a lot to do to get prepared for this. We thought we would chronicle some of the process and try to find our “voice” along the way.
Why the Rambling Roos? We met while students at Austin College in Sherman, TX, home of the Kangaroos, so we have always had a fondness for the kangaroo. In addition, we’re currently driving our second Fleetwood Bounder (a 2001 36S) which, of course, has a kangaroo in its logo. Rambling is probably what we will do in this blog, as well as in our travels.
We have been RVers since 1998 when we took our first trip to Alaska with our then 8-year-old daughter and nearly 1-year-old son. We knew nothing about RVing at the time, and didn’t even know we were “boondocking” when we went for days on end with no hookups. Needless to say, those 5 and 1/2 weeks were an intense learning experience! Prior to that, our RVing experience was limited to Viki’s youth in trailers with her parents and science club trips in high school. Roger was an experienced tent camper. More on that whole Alaska adventure later!
About 2016, Viki said, “I’d like to try out the full-time RV life for at least a year, sometime.” Perhaps we had thought of it earlier, but that is her first recognition of saying it out loud. Like most folks, we were on the typical American path through adulthood. Go to college…get married…get a job..buy a house (or two or three)…go to grad school…have kids…get another job…raise said kids…move again…take care of aging parents…get another job…start thinking about retirement. All of these can be done in varying order, but that’s about ours. We both felt like we wanted to take a different path going forward.
We are by no means ready to retire at this point and both have good jobs now. We are just looking to see how we can make this “dream” happen, someday. The pressure of maintaining our huge home on a huge lot with a pool and hot tub is getting to be too much for two people on their own. We know it’s going to be a challenge to downsize our home and belongings, to shift to a mobile lifestyle, and to redefine our expectations for the future, but we are ready! Let’s start the adventure!!
What an adventure! Best of luck to you!
Thanks so much!
It was wonderful meeting you at red river, best wishes!
Was so great to meet you and your wonderful family and well! Perhaps we will meet on the road again!
